What a Heating Contractor Gets Called For Out Here

01

HVAC installation

Heat pump changeouts, propane furnaces, and dual-fuel systems that run the heat pump most of the year and hand off to propane when it gets cold enough to matter. At this latitude dual-fuel genuinely earns its cost, which is not true a few states south. Sizing is where most of these jobs are won or lost. A system that is too big for the house short cycles, and one that is too small leans on the backup heat all winter. We pull the permit, whether that’s the Town of Ocean View or Sussex County.

02

HVAC maintenance

Book the tune-up before the first hard freeze. On a heat pump the parts that matter going into winter are the reversing valve and the defrost control, not just the filter. And on a house this close to the water, a fresh water rinse of the outdoor coil does more for the equipment than anything else on the list. You can do that one yourself with a hose between visits.

03

Mini splits and ductless systems

Ductless heat pumps for the three-season room, the converted porch, the garage, and the bonus room over it that never matched the rest of the house. It’s a common project here because so many shore cottages were added onto a piece at a time. A mini-split heats as well as it cools, so a room you used from May to September becomes a room you can use in February.

Good to Know

Heating Questions We Get Asked

Not seeing yours? Call and ask. Most of these started as questions somebody put to a technician on the phone.

It depends on what you have now and what goes in to replace it. A like-for-like heat pump changeout is the low end. A dual-fuel system, or a changeout that also needs new ductwork or a heavier electrical circuit, is the high end. Sizing moves the number too, and a system that is too big costs more and works worse. We’ll look at the house and give you a free estimate before anything starts.

Probably not. A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, so on a 25 degree night it runs long and steady and the air out of the vents feels cool against your hand even while the house is warming up. That part is normal. What isn’t normal is ice that stays on the outdoor coil through a full defrost cycle, a system that can’t hold the temperature you set, or emergency heat coming on by itself. Any of those three, call us.

It switches on electric resistance strips and takes the heat pump out of the picture. It works, and it costs a great deal more to run. Use it when the heat pump has failed and you need heat tonight. Don’t leave it on because the house feels drafty, and don’t treat it as a repair. If your system went to emergency heat on its own, something else failed and the strips are covering for it.

That depends on which utility serves your address, and in the 19970 zip code it is genuinely not obvious. Delmarva Power covers most of Ocean View, but Delaware Electric Cooperative territory is mixed in street by street and the two run separate rebate catalogs. Energize Delaware and the federal credits stack on top of whichever one you fall under. The tiers are written against SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings, so the equipment you choose decides which tier you land in. Give us the address and we’ll check before you pick a system.

Less than the brochure says. Fifteen to twenty years is the national figure. Two miles from the ocean, ten to twelve is more realistic, and salt is the reason. It pits the contactor, corrodes the coil fins and rusts the cabinet hardware. Rinsing the outdoor coil with fresh water a couple of times a year helps more than most people expect. If yours is past twelve and needs a compressor, put the money toward a replacement instead of the repair.

Yes. We’re insured and bonded, and we carry a Delaware HVACR license.
