Wired for a Beach Cottage, Asked to Run a House

The older homes on the original town grid off Central Avenue went in with 60 or 100 amp service, and the oldest of them still have a fuse box rather than breakers. That was plenty for a place nobody used in February. It isn’t plenty for a heat pump, an induction range, a hot tub and a car charging in the garage.

Two panel brands are worth knowing by name. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco both have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip when they should, which is the one failure mode a breaker exists to prevent. Insurers ask about them. If either name is on your panel door, that is worth a look regardless of whether anything has gone wrong yet.

Out here there’s a third thing nobody thinks about: the hardware outside. Meter sockets, service entrance cable and outdoor disconnects take salt air year round, and corrosion at the service entrance is both a safety problem and the part of the job most likely to turn a straightforward panel swap into a larger one.

Panel Replacement

Swapping an obsolete or undersized panel for a modern one at the same service size. This is the common job: a fuse box, a full panel with nowhere to land another circuit, or a brand with a failure history. Straightforward when the service entrance hardware is sound, and we check that before quoting rather than after.

Service Upgrades

Going from 60 or 100 amp service to 200, which means the meter, the service entrance and the utility connection as well as the panel. This is what you need when the panel is not the constraint, the supply is. Adding a heat pump, an EV charger and an induction range to a 100 amp house usually lands here.

Whole House Rewiring

Replacing the branch wiring itself rather than the panel feeding it. Worth considering where there is knob-and-tube in the oldest stock, ungrounded two-wire circuits with no path to ground, or aluminum branch wiring from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Often done alongside a remodel, because open walls are what make it affordable.

Service Entrance & Outdoor Hardware

Meter sockets, masts, disconnects and grounding. Salt gets to all of it, and a corroded service entrance is the thing most likely to be found once the cover comes off. Stainless and coastal-rated hardware costs more up front and it is the difference between doing this once and doing it twice.

A few signs are worth acting on. Your house still has a fuse box. Breakers trip more than occasionally. Lights dim noticeably when the air conditioning or a well pump starts. The panel is a Federal Pacific or a Zinsco. You are adding a heat pump, a hot tub, an induction range or an EV charger. Or there is a scorch mark or a burning smell near the panel, which is the one on this list that should not wait for a scheduled visit.

It is a known one. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers, and Zinsco after them, have a documented history of failing to trip under fault conditions, which is the single thing a breaker is there to do. Plenty of them have sat in houses for decades without incident, so this is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to replace it on your schedule rather than after something happens, and your insurer may ask about it either way.

They are different jobs. A new panel replaces the box and the breakers at the same service size, which solves a full panel or an obsolete one. A service upgrade raises the amperage coming into the house, which means the meter, the service entrance and coordination with the utility. If you have space and sound wiring but an old panel, the first. If you are adding major loads to a 100 amp house, usually the second.

It depends on which of those two you need and what is behind the cover. A like-for-like panel swap at the same service size is the low end. Going to 200 amp service, moving the meter, or replacing corroded service entrance hardware is the high end, and outdoor panels here take more weather than indoor ones.
